Engine Oil Replacement Reminder Light:
This light reminds you when to service your vehicle and replace the engine oil.  The light will come on when the ignition key is turned to "ON" and will go off after approximately a few seconds.  When you drive for about 4500 miles, this light is illuminated for about 3 seconds, then flashes for about 12 seconds with the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position. If you continue driving without replacing the engine oil, and if the distance driven exceeds 5000 miles, the light will come on after the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position. The light will remain on thereafter.

If the maintenance required light is flashing or on, we recommend that you give us a call to see if you need a service appointment. Sometimes the light comes on or flashes before or after your next service is due.  Please call BLAKE'S AUTOMOTIVE at your earliest opportunity.  BLAKE'S AUTOMOTIVE will put a static cling next service due reminder on your drivers windshield after every service we perform for you.  This windshield reminder is what you should follow, since the reminder light is based on miles driven from when it was last reset and may be inaccurate. 

Service Alert: Toyota Engine Sludge 
Sludge buildup inside the engine and adding too much engine oil can lead to serious problems.  We will document your service repair order at the time of your first service with Blake's Mobile Auto Services if your vehicle has one of these symptoms.  Our Certified Inspection Checklist will document all symptoms and issues.  It is very important to use Genuine Toyota Oil Filters, Motor Oil and to fill the engine crankcase with the exact amount of engine oil for your year and model.

How Sludge Forms:
Sludge formation begins when the chemically suspended particles of contaminants begin to settle out of the oil. It's a fairly daunting task for engine oil to suspend all the contaminants thrown at it, and any engine oil can do this successfully to a point. Toyota motor oil, and some other quality motor oils, are able to perform this task more effectively and for longer periods of time. But eventually, if the oil is not changed often enough, a "breaking point" will be reached. This breaking point is either when there are too many contaminants to handle or when the oil's chemical defenses are weakened, and it is caused by two main things: excessive accumulation of contaminants in the oil and chemical changes in the makeup of the oil itself (depletion of the additives and oxidation).  As more particles are suspended, less of the additives are available to do their job. Knowing this makes it easy to see why too much time between oil changes can be one cause of the oil reaching its "breaking point".

The engine's positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system is designed to purge combustion blowby gases, water vapour, and any other gaseous contaminants from the crankcase. This system should reduce or at least delay the rate of oil contamination. If the PCV system is inoperative or compromised,  (inadequate or localized crankcase vacuum), then the rate of sludge buildup could accelerate despite oil changes in accordance with manufacturers' specified intervals.  70 % of these blowby gases are unburned fuel (HC) that can dilute and contaminate engine oil, cause corrosion to critical parts, and contribute to sludge buildup.  At higher engine speeds, blowby gases increase crankcase pressure that can cause oil leakage from sealed engine surfaces. Refer to this pdf file from toyota for your information on Toyota PCV systems PCV.pdf

Another Sludge cause may surprise you: running the engine low on oil for a prolonged period of time can cause sludge. The detergent and oxidation inhibitors are important components of the additive package that prevent sludge from forming. When an engine is run low on oil, these additives have to work overtime to do their job. There is simply less of the additive package available to do the work of suspending particles and preventing oxidation (thickening) of the oil.
